Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is a real-fourth dimension strategy video game developed by Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires and published by Xbox Game Studios.[1] It is a remaster of the 2005 game Historic period of Empires Iii, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the original. It features significantly improved visuals, a remastered soundtrack, two new game modes, and four new civilizations, plus African and Mediterranean-themed DLCs every bit of June 2022[update]. The AI was improved, and a new "extreme" difficulty level was added. The number of cheats AI uses in the original game was reduced. The new AI can micromanage now, it is better at picking units, reading the map, reading its opponent's ground forces, making well-rounded regular army compositions, retreating from lost battles, and hit-and-run tactics on the highest levels.[4] [3]

An expansion pack adding the United States civilization was announced on April 10, 2021 and released on April 13, 2021. For a express fourth dimension, players could unlock it for free past completing 50 challenges, each themed effectually a The states state.[5] [vi]

A second expansion pack, The African Royals, was appear on July 20, 2021 and released on August 2, 2021. The African Royals expansion adds two new civilizations, the Ethiopians and the Hausa, likewise equally three new Historical Battles, fifteen new African maps, five new indigenous African civilizations to ally with, and xi new achievements.[7] [8]

An expansion pack adding the Mexico civilisation was announced on November 22, 2021 and released on December 1, 2021. Some other expansion pack, Knights of the Mediterranean, was announced on May 12, 2022 adding both Italian and Maltese (Knights Hospitaller) civilizations, and released on May 26, 2022.[xi]

On January 23, 2020, Microsoft announced that the closed beta would begin in early Feb. Each beta session will include a pocket-sized piece of the game. Larger closed beta sessions will be dedicated to multiplayer and matchmaking. Campaign beta sessions will exist limited to a very small group of players and just certain missions.[14] The first airtight beta session began on February 11, 2020, and ended on February 19, 2020.[fifteen] [16] The second closed multiplayer session began on March 31 and ran through April seven, 2020.[17]
